Oct 30th, 2011 - Tapeko gives birth at Brookfield Zoo, the calf does not survive

A bottlenose dolphin died within minutes of being born at the Brookfield Zoo early this morning, officials said.

The male calf was born at 6:51 a.m. to Tapeko, the zoo's 29-year-old dolphin after about three hours of labor, officials from the Brookfield Zoo said in a statement.

The mother began showing signs two days ago that she was close to going into labor, officials said. After that the staff began watching her around the clock, according to the zoo. At about 4:00 a.m. today, Tapeko started into full labor. Immediately after birth, the calf showed little movement and signs of weakness, according to the zoo.
